The Gail Valentine Memorial Scholarship Programs
The Gail Valentine Memorial Scholarship Association plans to establish a small cluster of scholarship awards focused on assisting students attending institutions where Mrs Valentine spent much of her teaching career. The assistance will be provided through business student tuition scholarships at Mission College in Thailand, a teaching exchange scholarship partnership program between Mission College and Avondale College that will enable students at Mission College to be able to study with international faculty and an Academic Excellence award. Specific details about the planned programs are explained below.
The Gail Valentine Memorial Scholarship for Women Students in Business
Purpose
This scholarship will assist promising young women undertaking the study of business at Mission College and is intended to help defray the cost of their tuition.
Eligibility
The scholarship will be open to third or fourth year women undergraduate students in the International business degree program. Students will apply for the scholarship.
Amount
The award is intended to help defray tuition expenses and is not available for accommodation or meal expense. The value of the award and the number of awards available may be amended from time to time as financial conditions allow and as the Trustees of the Association may determine.
Tenure
The award will be distributed equally across both semesters in the year in which the award is to be made.
Application
Application information and materials will be available from the Dean of the Business Faculty at Mission College.
The Gail Valentine Memorial Teaching and Research Scholarship
Purpose
The purpose of this scholarship award is to enrich the educational experience of students at Mission College through the fostering of an academic partnership between Avondale College and Mission College. It will facilitate research activities and teaching exchange opportunities for both Avondale and Mission College Faculty. It is intended to provide opportunities for Mission College students to study with international teaching faculty and to provide Mission College faculty professional development opportunities for a teaching/research exchange in Australia thereby enriching their teaching of students at Mission College.
Eligibility
The scholarship shall be available on a competitive basis for faculty members from both institutions. It will be available to each institution in alternating years.
Amount
The scholarship grant money shall be a grant of AUD 1,500 to be used toward the cost of airfares and related travel expenses between Mission College and Australia.
Conditions
Successful applicants will be expected to:
- teach at least one intensive class ( or assist with teaching of classes as needed and arranged by the partner institution), and
- undertake a research project at the partner institution if possible in Collaboration with a Teaching Colleague from the partner institution, and
- give a formal report on their research or their teaching exchange experience at a Faculty Colloquium or Scholarly Conference organised both at the host institution and upon their return to their home institution
- be willing to undertake the teaching assignment at the partner institution at a time convenient for the institution (this may sometimes involve exchanges during the July break or perhaps over the Christmas/New Year break).
Partnership Arrangements
The sending institution shall underwrite the salary of the teacher during the period of the research/teaching exchange
The receiving institution shall be responsible for local transport, board and accommodation expenses of the teacher during the period of the research/teaching exchange.
Application
Applications for the scholarship will be available from the Avondale Academic Vice President and shall be evaluated and determined by the relevant Avondale Committee.
NB: Arrangements may vary slightly depending on the final agreement between the two institutions.
The Gail Valentine Memorial Award for Excellence in Human Resource Management Studies
The Award:
This award shall consist of an annual textbook and study materials grant of $500.00. The grant shall be made available as a credit at the Avondale Bookstore or through the office of the Faculty Dean and shall not be refundable in whole or in part in cash.
Award Criteria
The award shall be made to a second year Business Degree Student with the highest GPA achieved across the cluster of HR studies undertaken in the HR Field during the previous two semesters (2nd semester + 1st Semester).
The cluster of studies shall include a minimum of three subjects. (If more studies in the field have been taken, then the highest three subjects shall be aggregated).
Where there is more than one candidate who may qualify for the award on the basis of GPA results, economic disadvantage and involvement of the candidates in service opportunities and co-curricular programs at the institution shall be considered.
The selection of the recipient for the award shall be made by the Faculty of the Business Faculty.

It is hoped to involve business sponsorship partners in establishing this award.
Subjects making up the cluster of HR studies shall include, Human Resource Management, Organisational Behaviour, Labour and Industrial Relations, Business Ethics.
